Spring Prep – Part 1: Your Landscape
Preparing your landscape for summer before your yard spirals out of control can save you time and hassle. Here are some quick reminders:
- Composting around your plants tends to yield the best results but a liquid fertilizer can be used as well.
- Weed control. Wait! Before you apply compost β apply a pre-emergent weed control, used to prevent the germination of seeds by inhibiting a key enzyme. This can save you from a great deal of weed pulling.
- Where does your lawn end and your landscaping begin? Not sure? Itβs time to edge.
- Light pruning really should be done right at the beginning of spring before the buds flower. So now is a good time to mark the calendar for fall pruning if you have not yet pruned your trees and shrubs. However, now is a great time to remove dead or damaged branches, weed around the trees and shrubs and remove any debris left over from winter damage.
- Planning a garden? Many vegetables have specific recommended planting times throughout Spring and Summer. For example, cucumbers crave heat β so they can follow spring crops of peas, spinach and lettuce. Knowing ahead of time the best times to plant the different crops you want can produce a thriving garden
